Glossary

Dump Station

A facility where RV owners empty their black-water (sewage) and gray-water (sink/shower) holding tanks.

Full definition

A dump station is a designated area at an RV storage facility, campground, or highway rest stop where owners drain their RV's holding tanks. Black-water tanks hold toilet waste; gray-water tanks hold sink and shower drainage. Both must be emptied before long-term storage to prevent stink, freeze damage, and tank failure. Storage facilities with on-site dump stations charge $5-$15 per use (or include 4-8 free uses annually). Without on-site access, owners must drive to the nearest truck stop, RV park, or municipal facility. The presence of a dump station significantly increases convenience for RV owners doing seasonal layup.

Pricing note

Per-use dump fee typically $5-$15; annual unlimited dump pass $50-$120.
