Glossary

Hurricane Rating

A facility's certified wind-load resistance, expressed in mph or Saffir-Simpson Category number.

Full definition

Hurricane rating refers to a storage facility's certified wind-load resistance for its structure. Expressed either in MPH (e.g., '150 mph rated') or Saffir-Simpson category (Cat 3 = 130 mph; Cat 4 = 156 mph; Cat 5 = 157+ mph). For coastal storage in Florida, Texas, Gulf states, and Atlantic states, hurricane rating is the single most important facility attribute. Pre-engineered light steel buildings often rate only 90-110 mph (Cat 1-2). Reinforced concrete + structural-steel commercial buildings can hit Cat 4-5 ratings. Get the rating in writing on your rental agreement - verbal claims do not survive insurance disputes after a storm.

Pricing note

Cat 3+ rated indoor storage typically commands 30-50% premium over standard indoor in hurricane states.
