Glossary
Chemical additive that prevents fuel from oxidizing, varnishing, or absorbing water during storage.
Fuel stabilizer is a chemical additive (most commonly Sta-Bil, Star Tron, PRI-G) added to a fuel tank before storage to prevent oxidation, varnishing, and phase separation. Modern E10 gasoline (10% ethanol) is particularly prone to absorbing atmospheric moisture during storage, which causes phase separation - the fuel and water-laden ethanol separate, creating a corrosive layer that ruins carburetors and fuel injectors. Stabilizer prevents this for 12-24 months depending on product. Critical for any vehicle stored 30+ days: boats, RVs, motorcycles, generators, lawn equipment. Add stabilizer first, then run the engine for 10+ minutes to circulate it through the entire fuel system.
A bottle of fuel stabilizer treats 80-160 gallons and costs $10-$20.
