Low-amperage smart charger that keeps a battery at full charge during long-term storage without overcharging.
A battery tender (also called a battery maintainer or smart charger) is a low-amperage charger designed to keep a battery at full charge during long-term storage. Unlike traditional chargers, tenders use a 4-stage charge algorithm (bulk, absorption, float, maintain) and automatically reduce to a trickle once the battery is full, preventing overcharging and water loss. Essential for storage longer than 30 days. Without a tender or disconnection, lead-acid batteries discharge ~1% per day and sulfate (form lead-sulfate crystals on plates) within 60-90 days, often irreversibly. Lithium batteries hold charge longer but still benefit from tender-style monitoring. Cost: $30-$120 for quality units.
Quality battery tenders cost $30-$120; saves $150-$400 in battery replacement over the life of the tender.
