Types of Boat Storage

Different boats need different storage. Here's what to look for based on your vessel.

⚓ Marina / Wet Slip

Your boat stays in the water at a dock. Best for frequent use. Watch for barnacle buildup and hull maintenance costs.

Typical cost: $200-$2,000/mo depending on length

Best for: Sailboats, large powerboats, frequent users

🏗 Dry Dock / Rack Storage

Boat stored on a rack in a covered building. Fork-lifted to water on request. Protects hull and reduces maintenance.

Typical cost: $150-$800/mo

Best for: Boats under 35ft, moderate use

🏠 Indoor Storage

Climate-controlled warehouse. Maximum protection from weather, UV, and theft. Often includes shrink-wrap service.

Typical cost: $100-$500/mo

Best for: Off-season storage, high-value boats

Boat Storage Buyer's Guide

What to Check Before Renting Boat Storage

  • Size clearance: Measure your boat + trailer total length and height. Confirm the facility can accommodate your rig including mirrors and antennas.
  • Access hours: Can you get your boat at 5am on a Saturday before a fishing trip? 24/7 access is critical for boaters.
  • Launch access: How far is the nearest boat ramp? Some facilities offer direct water access or shuttle service.
  • Security: Cameras, gated access, and lighting are minimum. Ask about theft and damage history.
  • Insurance: Your homeowner's policy likely does NOT cover a boat in storage. Ask about storage facility insurance and consider a separate marine storage policy.
  • Winterization: For seasonal storage, does the facility offer winterization/de-winterization? Fuel stabilization, battery maintenance, and shrink-wrap?
  • Wash/prep area: Freshwater washdown after saltwater use is essential. Check if the facility has a prep area.
  • Rate locks: Ask if the quoted rate is locked or if it increases after an introductory period. Get it in writing.

Boat Storage FAQ

How much does boat storage cost per month?
Boat storage costs range from $50/month for basic outdoor parking to $2,000+/month for a premium marina wet slip. Indoor storage typically runs $100-$500/month. Dry dock rack storage is $150-$800/month. Cost depends on boat length, storage type, location, and amenities. Coastal and high-demand areas cost more.
Is indoor or outdoor boat storage better?
Indoor storage protects your boat from UV damage, weather, and theft but costs more and may have limited access hours. Outdoor storage is cheaper and offers easier access but exposes your boat to the elements. For high-value boats or off-season storage, indoor is worth the premium. For frequent-use boats, outdoor or marina storage makes more practical sense.
Does my homeowner's insurance cover my boat in storage?
Usually not adequately. Most homeowner's policies have very limited coverage for boats (often $1,000-$1,500 max) and may not cover theft, vandalism, or weather damage while in storage. You likely need a separate boat insurance policy or a storage facility policy. Ask your insurer specifically about "off-premises" coverage for stored watercraft.
What should I do before putting my boat in storage?
Before storing: (1) Clean and dry the boat thoroughly, (2) Add fuel stabilizer and run the engine briefly, (3) Disconnect and charge the battery, (4) Drain all water systems to prevent freezing, (5) Apply wax for UV protection, (6) Cover or shrink-wrap the boat, (7) Remove electronics, valuables, and perishables, (8) Check tire pressure if stored on a trailer. Many facilities offer winterization services.
